Making a Tool Centre Height Setting Gauge

This tool needs its cutting edge set to the centre height of the lathe. There are several ways to do this but one of the easiest is with a home-made height gauge. When starting out, this is a chicken and egg situation: you need to make the gauge to set the height, but you also need a tool set at the correct height to make the gauge.

The simplest way to overcome this problem is to set the lathe tool to the approximate centre height and take a cut across the face of the bar. Depending on whether there is a pip remaining on the end of the bar, you should get an idea how far out the tool height is. If there is no pip this means the tool is on correct centre height or too high. A pip means the tool is too low. Of course you may have been lucky, so try dropping the tool slightly until a pip remains. You can then raise the tool a few thou at a time until the pip disappears. The tool should then be on centre height.

Bar with no pip: tool on centre.
